News: Metrosexual Koreans Seen as Guinea Pigs for New Cosmetics

The Chosun Ilbo recently reported an upturn in men's cosmetics. As more and more Korean men realize the importance of good grooming and skincare as part of their health, South Korea's cosmetic industry rises to premiere status in Asia. Here's the full report:

Metrosexual Koreans Seen as Guinea Pigs for New Cosmetics

High-end foreign cosmetics brand SK-II recently introduced a skincare line for men in Korea, its first such foray in any country. The decision came after liquid essence for men, which hit local stores last October and costs W160,000 (US$1=1,120) a bottle, saw a month's worth of inventory sell out in just four days.

"Korea accounts for 40 percent of the world's high-end cosmetics market for men, and Korean men are often considered in the industry as test beds for new products," a sales associate of SK-II said.

Men are quickly forming the main ranks of cosmetics shoppers, with the domestic market for men's beauty products growing 15 percent each year. Industry watchers expect the market will surpass W1 trillion this year.

In Korea, concealers, products that minimize pores and whitening products have seen higher sales growth than basic skincare products such as lotions or skin conditioners among men. Meanwhile, domestic cosmetics brand Amore Pacific opened a make-up store for men in the trendy Hongik University area in northern Seoul and it attracts 300 customers a day on average.

The same holds true for apparel. Sales of women's clothing at Lotte Department Store nationwide fell 5 percent in January compared to a year earlier, but increased 7 percent over the same period for men's clothing. Shinsegae Department Store became the first retailer in the industry to open a section last year specializing only in men's fashion and sales have already risen 450 percent since it opened.

Domestic retailers say Korean men in their 20s and 30s have grown up watching popular men's dance groups since the late 1990s and are used to spending money on personal grooming. For example, many online shopping sites saw a surge in sales of men's undergarments that make the wearer look more muscular. Sales of body shaping or padded underwear rose 170 percent in February from one year earlier, according to popular online shopping mall 11st.

Wow! W 1 Trillion (PhP 37 Billion/$800 Million)! Anyhoo, I'd give anything to see Daniel Henney endorse a cosmetics brand. Anything!!!!

News: Menswear designers who dressed Girls' Generation

When the nine ladies belted out, "B-b-bring the boys out!", little did we notice that this also somehow referred to what they wore. Five of Girls' Generation's outfits in their music video, "Boys" were apparently designed by Menswear brand Sneezer Parade (SNPR). Here's the report by Korea Times:

Menswear designers who dressed Girl's Generation

Soon after nine-member Girl’s Generation’s video of “The Boys” was released in October, the phones of menswear brand Sneezer Parade (SNPR) started ringing.

“So many people who saw the video wanted Yuri’s top,” Kim Jong-wha, designer and art director of SNPR told The Korea Times in Myeong-dong, Seoul, Wednesday.

The video features four looks ― black and white, ballroom dress, mini dress and sporty. Kim and two designers ― Park Se-jun and Kim Kyung-min who were unavailable for the interview ― made four pairs of pants and five tops (for Yuri, Sunny, Seohyun, Tiffany and Yuna) for the sporty look.

They started by listening to the unreleased track and studying the choreography. “We noticed the big arm movements, so we wanted to make openings on the arms so that it looks active and shows a little skin when they dance,” Kim said.

Yuri’s sought-after top has a long slit along the arm while Sunny’s red jacket has cut-outs on the shoulder.

The singers also do multiple semi-splits in the music video.

“We definitely did not want the pants to rip in the middle of a performance, so we used extra elastic and durable materials and double, triple seemed the pants.”

It was a challenge for the three designers who usually make menswear.

“The biggest hurdle was working with unfamiliar materials. Unlike guy’s clothes, a lot of soft and delicate materials are used for women’s clothing and handling them was pretty difficult,” Kim said.

The girls’ sizes were, not surprisingly, incredibly small including size 23 pants.

“The clothes turned out so small, especially for petit members like Sunny and Taeyeon ― we were surprised to see that they actually fit in those pants,” Kim recalled.

It also was a speedy job; they got started on Sept. 13 and delivered the final products to the set on the morning of the shoot on Sept 16.

“We were working through the night, and on the last day, all stylists for Girl’s Generation came to our studio to help with detail jobs like sewing on beads.”

All in all, the designers had fun working outside their box, and the K-pop group’s fame led visit counts of SNPR’s blog to jump from one digit to 5,000.

Some fans commented that they did not like the look because they were not uniform.

“We were worried about that too. We wanted to focus on individuals but they are members of a group,” Kim said.

SNPR, whose name was inspired by author Seth Godin’s use of the word “sneezer” as an early adaptor who spreads ideas and trends to others, launched in January.

SNPR strives for the classic look ― trench coats, striped shirts ― with eye-catching details that sets it apart from some cookie-cutter brands.

For example, a pea coat from their Fall/Winter collection has a simple cut but the horn-buttons have engraved dot prints. A flannel from the collection has sleeve buttons in multiple colors.

SNPR incorporates various materials to make unique products. A-Hose, a bag from SNPR, uses the hose inside air conditioners as the handle, creating a crisp look.

Kim Jong-wha studied fine art and fashion design and wants to approach his work as part of an art culture. Along with their collections, SNPR hold exhibits of sketches and sculptures that inspired or were inspired by their fashion endeavors.

Their clothes are available at multi-shops, A-land and Lab 5 in Myeong-dong, and Openingshop in Sinsa-dong.

Philippine Fashion Week SS 2012: The Ramp/Crossings

Two of my aunts were privileged to watch The Ramp/Crossings' show at the Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer Shows 2012 at the SMX Convention Center in Manila last Saturday, October 29, 2011. Though I wasn't able to go due to prior personal commitments, I still have photos from the event, as shared to me by one of my aunts. Thank you Aunt Agnes! Glad you enjoyed the show!

The Ramp and Crossings' collections for S/S 2012 featured a mix of architectural and preppy outfits in black, white, blue and yellow from the different local, Asian and European brands that they carry.

News: Middle-aged men want to wear like actors Cha and Kim

All over the world, middle-aged men look up to the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas for clothing styles. So who do South Korean men look up to? They look up to actors Cha Seung Won (차승원) and Kim Myeong Min. Here's the latest men's (or should I say ahjusshi (아저씨)?)  trend news from Korea Herald:

Middle-aged men want to wear like actors Cha and Kim

Men in their 40s have chosen actors Cha Seung-won and Kim Myeong-min as fashion leaders they want to imitate.

A survey by Chaeil Industries showed 14.5 percent of men wanted to dress like Cha and Kim. 500 men between the ages 40 and 49 were surveyed.

The department head of Galaxy marketing team Han Ju-young said the survey was conducted to get a glimpse of the sense of taste and the tendencies of men in their fourties. “It seems like Cha was voted for his classy style and Kim for his charismatic looks,” Han said.
