Event: SM City Batangas Wedding Expo

To all Batangueños, Batangueñas and everyone else, visit SM City Batangas’ Wedding Expo. It opened last Monday, 25 April and will run until this Saturday 30 April. The event will feature the best wedding suppliers in the region and from all over the country, and will culminate in a fashion show.

Sidenote: I like the local brands carried by SM, but I’m not keen on SM’s use of Caucasian models on their posters. I know some people think the response will be better but it’s not helping locals that want to get into modeling find simple, decent and legal modeling gigs.

May Magazine Photoshoot: IU for SURE Magazine

The whole photo shoot featuring teen K-Pop singer IU was shot in London, England in the United Kingdom. You can find this editorial in the May 2011 issue of SURE Magazine, South Korea. It's actually very fitting as the Royal Wedding is in a few days and the photo shoot was done in England itself.

IU first gained popularity after she did acoustic covers of popular K-Pop songs in 2009, including Super Junior’s “Sorry, Sorry”, Girls’ Generation’s “Gee” and other hits such as SHINee’s “Juliette” and Big Bang’s “Lies”.

I totally LOVE the bag!

IU released the song Marshmallow towards the end of 2009. Her career soared to new heights in early 2010 when she performed the song “Nagging” with 2AM’s Im Seu Long for the TV Show “We Got Married.”

And her shoes!

And the bag again. :)

IU was also cast in her first acting role as Pil Suk in the KBS drama-comedy-musical show, “Dream High”.

From being a modestly-recognized talent, IU now has millions and millions of fans. With her talent, positive and humble personality, IU will surely have a long successful future in the Korean music industry.

Designer: Dita Sandico-Ong

With the support of the Philippine Consulate General, renowned Philippine designer Dita Sandico-Ong’s works were featured in a fashion show and exhibit launched last 15 March 2011, held at the Kalayaan Hall, Philippine Center in New York. The exhibit was open for public viewing from 15 March to 8 April. Entitled “With a Touch of Green”, the collection featured Filipiniana-inspired designs made from abaca or banana fiber, including dresses, wraps and tops. According to the Consul’s office, the collection reflected Dita Sandico Ong’s missions of promoting Philippine-produced materials, “cultural awareness and sustainable, ecologically-aware design” as well as women empowerment.

Dita Sandico-Ong has been in the local fashion business for twenty-five years and is a staunch supporter of locally-produced materials. She graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Metro Manila with a Fine Arts Degree in 1982 and the Tobe-Coburn School in New York with a Degree in Fashion Design in 1984. Dita was the merchandising manager for local department store C.O.D. before she built her own clothing company called Cache Apparels. At present she is the president and designer of Cache Apparels and is also a fiber consultant for the Center of International Trade Missions (CITEM).

Some of the designs showcased during the fashion show entitled "With a Touch of Green"

Dita also works closely with indigenous peoples' (IP) communities, particularly with the fishing communities of Baras, Catanduanes. Her creations are born out of sustainable livelihood projects in that area. Dita says “Banana fiber from the Philippines is the best fiber in the world," adding “it is the strongest in the world as well. With this abaca – inspired fashion, we are getting back to basics in promoting environmental awareness, and we are further raising the bar in terms of high-end fashion which will encourage other countries to have a more acute appreciation for Philippine culture.” Apart from abaca, she has also used other materials such as piña-lino, abel-iloco, banana linen, and banana rayon in her collections. Dita is widely-known as an ‘ethical fashion designer’ and through the years has earned respect among designers, fashion lovers and environmentalists in the Philippines. Her advocacy goes beyond fashion as she is also the President of Earthaven, “a foundation that caters to alternative living”. Earthaven is a 27-hectare eco-village located in San Mateo, Rizal dedicated to the preservation of traditional values and the protection of the environment.

Dita Sandico-Ong's works range from simple wraps to beautiful dresses
The sustainable development campaign began in the very early nineties, yet Dita Sandico-Ong began working with and for the environment in the mid-eighties through fashion. Let she be an inspiration to everyone who wishes to adopt an eco-friendly, IP-community loving lifestyle. If she can do it, then so can we!

Dita Sandico-Ong will be opening shop soon in the US, so please do watch out for that and support her and her advocacies.

More power Ma’am Dita!

Event: Big Bang Bazaar

If you don't want to go with the crowds in SM Megamall, here's another shopping event you can go to! Ateneo Management Association, GoNegosyo, Belle de Jour and David and Goliath presents the BIG BANG BAZAAR from April 30 to May 1 at the NBC Tent, Fort Bonifacio in Taguig. The Big Bang bazaar will feature many locally-made products so go check it out and support local talent!

Designer: Robin Tomas

There is another Filipino designer who is currently making it big beyond our lush shores and he is none other than Robin Tomas, a New York-based fashion designer and only child of Philippine media personality Tessie Tomas.

Robin Tomas
Thirty-three year old Robin graduated from the University of the Philippines – Diliman with a degree in advertising. He worked for the local advertising industry for two years before entering Parsons School of Design in New York in 2000. While in Parsons, Robin apprenticed with Valentino and later on with Anna Sui. Robin not only trained with the best, but was also the best in his class as he graduated with top honors. After graduation, he worked and designed menswear for American brands Gap International and Tommy Hilfiger’s European and Japanese markets. He also designed menswear and children’s clothing for J. Crew. In 2009, Robin launched his first collection in the Philippines which notably reflected his love for elegance and was well received by local fashion lovers.

In October of the same year, Robin joined Supima’s men’s basic t-shirt design reinvention competition. Supima stands for “Superior Pima” and is a non-profit organization for American Pima growers from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Superior Pima is a type of luxury cotton made of superior fiber and is silky to the touch. In January of 2010, Robin won the Supima Award for the Best Reinvention of the Tee. His design was launched on 19 March 2011 at Bloomingdale’s in New York.  At $88, the price seems pretty steep, but considering that it is made by a Filipino and that it is made of Supima, then it is all worth it. Hopefully he gets to come back soon and launch his line locally for Filipino men to wear.

TOMAS for Supima

Robin Tomas is also ready to launch his Fall collection, which you could initially view on his official website. Robin’s success in the fashion world goes to show that the Filipino values of humility, hard work and determination go long way. It’s really admirable to see that he did not bank on his mom’s popularity but rather relied on his own talent to get to where he is now (In hindsight, his mom Tessie better known as "Teysi", was truly a great mother figure, not just in media but in real life as she raised her son very well).

To Robin, congratulations and may more opportunities come your way!

Robin Tomas

May Magazine Photo Shoot II: After School and f(x)

For the month of May, girl groups After School and f(x) were also featured in Elle Girl Korea and High Cut, respectively.

When you mention the girl group 'After School', the immediate thing that comes to mind is the word sexy. Or maybe their leader Ka Hi. Anyway, the nine-member girl group is featured in Elle Girl Korea, as they will be making a comeback this April 28. In this photo shoot, they depict different genres of music.

Disco

Punk Rock

Brit Pop

Acoustic

Swing Jazz

And when you mention the girl group 'f(x)', you'd think of the light funky songs they've performed and their current hit, Pinocchio. In this photo shoot, the girls are made to look like New York Uptown girls decked in head-to-toe Tory Burch. Simply put, they were made to look like Blair Waldorf.
